Getting the “Mohs” Out of Metal: Choosing the Right Metals for Glass Display Stands

Choosing the Right Metals for Glass Display Stands

When creating a display stand for glass artwork, selecting the right metal is crucial to ensure the safety of the glass and create the desired aesthetic. Here’s a little guide to help you make informed choices about metal selection.

The Mohs Scale: A Quick Overview

The Mohs scale measures a material's hardness, ranking from 1 (softest) to 10 (hardest). As a general rule-of-thumb, materials that are HIGHER on the scale will scratch or score materials that are LOWER on the scale. Glass typically falls around 5.5 on the Mohs scale, meaning harder metals can scratch or damage it, while metals that are lower on the scale can safely touch the glass without scoring it.

Metals Safe to Touch Glass

To avoid scratches, metals lower than glass on the Mohs scale are the best choice for points of contact. These include:

  • Brass

  • Copper

  • Lead

  • Aluminum

  • Zinc

Metals to Avoid Direct Contact with Glass

Harder metals, such as steel and stainless steel can damage glass if they come into direct contact. These metals are better suited for structural elements, such as the base or frame of a display stand. However, I often make all-steel display stands and simply add a bit of silicone anywhere that the glass is supported.

Mixing and Matching Metals

Combining metals can create both functional and visually striking designs. For example:

  • A steel base and frame provide strength and stability, while brass or copper prongs can add a touch of sophistication and color while safely supporting the glass

  • An all-aluminum display stand is great for a modern, sleek design that is safe on glass

  • A stainless steel frame with brass prongs is a great combination for safely displaying glass outdoors

This approach balances durability with aesthetic appeal while keeping the glass secure and protected.

Final Thoughts

When designing custom glass display stands, the thoughtful selection of metals ensures the safety of the glass while enhancing the overall design. By understanding the Mohs scale and the unique properties of each metal, I create a displays that are both functional and beautiful!
