Caring for your glass display stand
How to Care for Your Metal Display Stand for Glass Artwork
Metal display stands are not only functional but also add an elegant touch to your glass artwork. To keep your display stand looking its best, a little maintenance goes a long way. Here’s a complete guide on caring for your metal display stand so it remains a beautiful, sturdy foundation for your art.
About the Finish: Hot Oil Varnishing Process
Most of my metal display stands are treated with a hot oil varnishing process, where I heat the metal and apply a layer of boiled linseed oil. This technique creates a lasting, corrosion-resistant finish that protects the metal from moisture and maintains its beauty over time. With proper care, this finish will last for years in indoor environments.
Routine Cleaning
For regular maintenance, keeping the stand free of dust and debris will help preserve its finish and appearance.
Dusting: A simple dusting with a dry, microfiber towel is usually all that’s needed. Microfiber is gentle on the finish and easily picks up dust.
Wiping Up Moisture: If any liquid or moisture gets on the stand, promptly wipe it off with a dry towel. This helps prevent water spots and protects the oil finish from unwanted moisture exposure.
For stubborn dust & debris: If your display stand gets dirty and proves a little difficult to dust, I’ve found that mineral oil often does the trick. Wipe the stand down with a bit of mineral oil, and then buff it out with a dry cloth. For more stubborn debris or stains, let the oil set for a few minutes before buffing. Repeat the process as necessary.
Managing Rust or Oxidation: Embracing or Controlling Patina
Over time, it’s possible you might notice a patina or slight oxidation forming on the metal. For some, this natural development enhances the look of the piece, adding character and a unique, aged appearance. If you enjoy the patina’s look, feel free to let it develop without any intervention.
However, if you prefer the original finish and would like to prevent further oxidation, follow these simple steps:
Refreshing and Protecting the Finish
Clean the Stand: Start by wiping down the metal with an alcohol-based cleanser, such as isopropyl alcohol. This will remove any dirt, oils, or oxidation, preparing the surface for a new layer of protection. Allow the stand to dry completely.
Reapply Boiled Linseed Oil: Once dry, apply a thin layer of boiled linseed oil over the metal’s surface. Let the oil set for about 10 minutes to penetrate the metal.
Buff to a Satin Shine: After the oil has set, use a clean microfiber towel to buff the metal. This will help create a smooth, satin finish that enhances the metal’s shine and renews the protective layer against moisture and rust.
With these simple steps, you’ll keep your display stand looking polished, protecting it from wear while allowing your glass artwork to shine. Regular care will ensure that your metal display remains a beautiful and lasting addition to your space!
